Summary

B0010 indicates a fault in the front left (driver's side) airbag deployment circuit. The airbag control module (ACM) has detected an open circuit, short circuit, or resistance problem in the wiring or squib (igniter) that deploys the driver's airbag. The most common cause is a faulty clock spring (35%), followed by a damaged wiring connector (25%) and a failed airbag module (20%). The airbag warning light will be on, and the driver's airbag will not deploy in a crash until this is repaired.

Severity: High — airbag may not deploy in a collision
Safe to drive: Yes, cautiously — airbag will likely not deploy in a crash, but the vehicle is otherwise drivable
Repair cost: $200–$1,200 depending on cause
DIY difficulty: Moderate to Hard

What does B0010 mean?

The supplemental restraint system (SRS) uses a dedicated control module to monitor all airbag deployment circuits continuously. Each airbag has a squib — a small pyrotechnic igniter — connected to the control module through a specific wiring circuit. For the driver's front airbag, the circuit passes through the clock spring (a coiled ribbon cable inside the steering column that maintains an electrical connection as the steering wheel turns).

B0010 tells you the ACM has detected a problem specifically in the front left (driver's side) airbag deployment circuit. The module continuously checks circuit resistance — a properly functioning squib circuit typically reads between 2 and 4 ohms. If the resistance is too high (open or high-resistance connection), too low (short circuit), or the circuit is shorted to ground or battery voltage, the ACM sets B0010 and illuminates the airbag warning light.

When this code is active, the SRS system disables deployment of the driver's front airbag. Other airbags (passenger, side, curtain) may still function if their circuits are healthy, but the driver has no frontal airbag protection. The airbag light on the dashboard will remain illuminated, which will also cause the vehicle to fail a safety inspection in most jurisdictions.
