Summary

P0172 means the engine is running too rich on Bank 1 — too much fuel or not enough air. The most common causes are a faulty O2 sensor sending false lean signals (30%), a leaking fuel injector (25%), and a dirty or faulty MAF sensor over-reporting airflow (20%). A rich condition wastes fuel, fouls spark plugs, and accelerates catalytic converter damage. Check the MAF sensor and fuel trims first to narrow the cause.

Severity: Moderate — catalyst damage accumulates over time
Safe to drive: Yes, short distances
Repair cost: $8–$500 depending on cause
DIY difficulty: Easy to Moderate

What does P0172 mean?

The PCM adjusts fuel injector pulse width to maintain a 14.7:1 air-fuel ratio. When the upstream O2 sensor reports a rich mixture, the PCM reduces fuel delivery. P0172 sets when the PCM has reduced fuel delivery as far as it can (typically -20% to -25% long-term fuel trim) and the mixture is still rich.

A rich condition means excess fuel is entering the combustion chamber. This unburned fuel washes oil off the cylinder walls (accelerating wear), fouls spark plugs, overloads the catalytic converter, and wastes fuel. You may notice black soot on the tailpipe, a fuel smell from the exhaust, and reduced fuel economy.

Bank 1 is the side with cylinder 1. If P0175 (Bank 2 rich) is also present, the cause is in a shared system.
