Summary
P0441 means the PCM detected that the EVAP purge valve isn't flowing the expected amount of fuel vapor from the charcoal canister to the intake manifold. The most common cause is a faulty purge valve (45%), followed by a disconnected or cracked purge hose (25%) and a clogged charcoal canister (15%). The purge valve is a $15–$60 part that's usually accessible on top of the engine — a straightforward replacement on most vehicles.
Severity: Low — emissions code, no drivability impact in most cases
Safe to drive: Yes
Repair cost: $15–$250 depending on cause
DIY difficulty: Easy to Moderate
What does P0441 mean?
The EVAP purge system routes stored fuel vapors from the charcoal canister into the intake manifold to be burned during normal engine operation. The PCM controls this through the purge valve (also called the purge solenoid), opening it under specific conditions — typically at cruise speed when the engine is warm.
P0441 sets when the PCM commands the purge valve open and doesn't see the expected change in fuel vapor flow. It monitors this through fuel trim shifts or a dedicated purge flow sensor. If the PCM opens the purge valve and nothing happens — no change in fuel trims, no vapor flow detected — it flags P0441.
Unlike P0442 or P0455 (which indicate leaks), P0441 is about flow through the purge pathway, not system sealing.
