EVAP Purge Control Valve Circuit Shorted

P0445 means the EVAP purge control valve circuit has a short. Usually caused by a faulty purge valve, damaged wiring, or a connector issue.

Summary

P0445 means the PCM has detected a short circuit in the EVAP purge control valve (also called the canister purge valve). The most common causes are a failed purge valve with an internal short (50%), damaged wiring or a pinched harness (30%), and a corroded connector (15%). This is an emissions system code with no impact on driveability. The repair is usually straightforward and inexpensive.

What does P0445 mean?

The evaporative emission control (EVAP) system prevents fuel vapors from escaping the fuel tank into the atmosphere. The purge control valve is an electronically controlled solenoid that opens to allow stored fuel vapors from the charcoal canister to be drawn into the engine's intake manifold and burned during normal combustion.

The PCM controls the purge valve by pulsing its ground circuit. P0445 is set when the PCM detects that the purge valve circuit has a short — either to ground (low resistance path that draws excessive current) or to voltage (the circuit is energized when it should not be). This is specifically a circuit short code, distinct from P0443 (general circuit malfunction) and P0441 (incorrect purge flow).

With a shorted purge valve circuit, the EVAP system cannot properly purge fuel vapors. The charcoal canister may become saturated over time, and fuel vapors that would normally be burned in the engine are instead trapped. You will not feel any difference in how the vehicle drives.
