Summary

P0730 means the transmission control module (TCM) detected that the actual gear ratio — calculated by comparing input shaft speed to output shaft speed — doesn't match the expected ratio for the commanded gear. This is a performance code, not a circuit code: the sensors are working, but the transmission isn't behaving as expected. The most common causes are low or contaminated transmission fluid (30%), worn clutch packs (25%), and faulty shift solenoids (20%). This is a serious code that usually indicates real mechanical or hydraulic trouble inside the transmission.

Severity: High — indicates the transmission is not holding or engaging gears correctly
Safe to drive: Not safe for extended driving — risk of further damage and loss of gear engagement
Repair cost: $20–$4,000+ depending on cause
DIY difficulty: Moderate to Shop-recommended

What does P0730 mean?

Every gear in an automatic transmission has a mathematically precise ratio between input speed and output speed. First gear might be 2.97:1, second gear 1.63:1, and so on — the exact numbers depend on the transmission model. The TCM knows these ratios and continuously compares the calculated ratio (from the input and output speed sensors) to the expected ratio for the gear it commanded.

When P0730 sets, the TCM is saying: "I told the transmission to be in gear X, but the actual speed ratio doesn't match gear X." This means something is slipping, not engaging fully, or engaging the wrong gear altogether.

This is one of those codes that often accompanies noticeable symptoms — you'll likely feel slipping under acceleration, RPM flares during shifts, harsh engagement, or the transmission hunting between gears. In some cases, the vehicle may feel like it's in the wrong gear entirely.

P0730 is a generic code. Some manufacturers use gear-specific versions (P0731 for 1st gear ratio, P0732 for 2nd, etc.), which can narrow the diagnosis further.
