Lost Communication with Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module

U0121 means the vehicle lost communication with the ABS module. Anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control are disabled.

Summary

U0121 indicates that a control module has lost CAN bus communication with the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module. The most common causes are a failed ABS module (~30%), CAN bus wiring faults (~25%), and low battery voltage or corroded grounds (~20%). When this code is active, ABS, traction control (TCS), electronic stability control (ESC), and sometimes hill-start assist are all disabled. The ABS, TCS, and ESC warning lights will illuminate on the dashboard.

Severity: High — ABS, traction control, and stability control are disabled
Safe to drive: No — safety-critical braking systems are offline
Repair cost: $100–$1,000 depending on cause
DIY difficulty: Moderate

What does U0121 mean?

The ABS module controls anti-lock braking, traction control, and electronic stability control. It monitors individual wheel speed sensors and modulates brake pressure at each wheel to prevent lockup during hard braking or wheel spin during acceleration. The module communicates on the CAN bus to share wheel speed data with the ECM, TCM, and instrument cluster, and to receive engine torque and steering angle data needed for stability control.

U0121 is set when another module (typically the ECM, BCM, or gateway) stops receiving expected CAN messages from the ABS module. The ABS module may have lost power, its CAN bus connection may be damaged, or the module's internal electronics may have failed.

The ABS module is typically located in the engine bay, mounted to the ABS hydraulic unit (the component with multiple brake lines running to it). This location exposes it to heat, vibration, and moisture. On many vehicles, the electronic module can be replaced separately from the hydraulic unit, which significantly reduces repair cost compared to replacing the entire ABS assembly.
