Summary

P0741 means the TCM commanded the torque converter clutch (TCC) to lock up, but the expected RPM drop didn't happen — the converter is slipping when it should be locked. Unlike P0740 (a circuit code), P0741 is a performance code: the electrical circuit is working, but the clutch isn't engaging mechanically. The leading causes are a stuck TCC solenoid (35%), contaminated transmission fluid (25%), and a worn TCC friction clutch (20%). You'll notice worse fuel economy and higher RPMs at highway cruise.

Severity: Moderate — fuel economy drops noticeably, risk of overheating on long drives
Safe to drive: Safe for short trips — avoid extended highway driving and towing

What does P0741 mean?

The torque converter clutch (TCC) is designed to create a solid mechanical link between the engine and transmission at highway speeds, eliminating the inherent slippage of the fluid coupling. When the TCM commands TCC lockup, it energizes the solenoid, hydraulic pressure engages the clutch, and engine RPM should drop slightly to match transmission input shaft speed exactly (zero slip).

P0741 sets when the TCM commands lockup but the input speed sensor still shows slippage — the engine RPM stays higher than the transmission input speed, meaning the converter clutch isn't grabbing. The "stuck off" designation means the clutch is staying disengaged when it should be locking.

The most noticeable symptom is worse fuel economy — typically 2–5 MPG on the highway. You might also notice the tachometer reading 100–300 RPM higher than usual at cruise speed. Some drivers report a shudder that comes and goes as the clutch tries and fails to engage. On many vehicles, the overdrive light will flash or a "check transmission" message will appear.
